Fuengirola

Originally, Fuengirola was a fishing village, consisting of local fishermen and their families who derived their income from the sea. In the 1970s this all started to change, as Fuengirola was turned into a holiday resort complete with the only Zoo on the Costa del Sol, outdoor markets, concerts and live entertainment and more cafés and bars than thought possible. Fish Alley, the street near the Fuengirola port where the fishermen used to sell their catch, is now home to the best fish restaurants. The beaches of Fuengirola are also home to the annual World Paint Ball Championships every May.
The name Fuengirola comes from the Phoenicians, who had a boat
called a "girola", a type of fishing boat that was popular
along the south coast of Spain.
Fuengirola is today a thriving town with a plethora of shops covering
all tastes and pockets. Parque Miramar, just on the edge of town
is a large shopping mall along the lines of an American mall staying
open until 10:00pm 6 days a week and houses all the high street
brands and designer stores as well as loads of eateries and cafe
bars. Close to the Miramar on the service road is a Dunnes store
and then just before the Mijas road junction is another retail
park with DIY stores, Major electrical outlets and a designer
bathroom showroom. Mijas Road is the main area for builders merchants
and car showrooms while Avenida de Mijas has every kind of store
you can think of including major furniture showrooms. If retail
therapy is your thing Fuengirola can satisfy even the most demanding
of retail appetite.
